No sound from CD due to CD-ROM drive not installed properly
Cause:
The CD-ROM drive was not installed properly.
Solution:
CAUTION: Only a qualified computer technician should perform the installation, diagnostic or maintenance tasks below.
Reinstall the CD-ROM drive.
1) Remove the computer cover

2) Install new CD-ROM card:
a) Locate the jumpers or DIP switches on the card, and lay the card down on the static envelope.
b) Read the CD-ROM card manual and identify which, if any, settings must be changed on the card for this particular computer.
c) Move Jumpers or Change DIP Switches, if necessary.

d) Identify a free expansion slot of the appropriate size, and remove the rear metal slot cover.
e) Touch the metal sides of the computer to ground any static and, grasping the CD-ROM card by its edges, insert the bottom of the card (part with the gold-striped bars) into the free slot. Press down firmly until card is completely seated.
f) Insert the screw, previously removed from the rear metal slot cover, into the top notch of the mounting bracket on the card and the screw hole, and tighten it securely.
3) Internal CD-ROM unit only:
a) Locate an empty drive bay.
b) Slide CD-ROM unit into drive bay and one of the following:
1] If unit has slide rails, secure the drive in the bay by inserting two screws along the front of rails.
2] If no side rails are present, fasten the drive in the bay by fastening two screws in each side of the bay/drive.
c) Locate an unused power cable/connector coming from the power supply, and plug it into the power socket on the rear of the CD-ROM drive.
d) Attach one end of the supplied ribbon cable to the back of the CD-ROM unit, and the other end to the CD-ROM card or other SCSI adapter card.
4) External CD-ROM unit only:
a) Locate the data cable (usually with 25-pin connectors) and attach one end to the port connection on the back of the CD-ROM unit and plug the other end into the socket of the card just installed (on back of computer).
b) Connect CD-ROM to adapter and plug the adapter into a surge protector or wall socket.
c) Turn the CD-ROM unit power switch on.
5) Reinstall the cables and turn on the computer.
a) Make sure no parts or tools remain in metal sides of the computer.
b) Replace necessary cables (power, keyboard, video) and plug in the power cable.
c) Turn on the CD-ROM and then the computer.
6) From the taskbar, select 'Start'.
7) Select 'Settings' and select 'Control Panel'.

8) Double-click 'Add New Hardware'.

9) To install or reinstall the CD-ROM driver:
NOTE: Read the instructions on each screen carefully as you go through this process.
a) Choose 'Next'.
b) Choose 'No'.
c) Choose the 'Next' button.
d) Select 'CD Controllers' from the 'Hardware Types' list box.
e) Choose 'Next'.
f) To locate the type of CD-ROM card driver and install it:
1] Select the manufacturer of the sound card in the 'Manufacturers' list box.

NOTE: If unsure of the manufacturer, consult the CD-ROM or computer documentation.
2] Select the CD-ROM model from the 'Model Type' list box.
NOTE: Again, if unsure of the model type, consult the CD-ROM or computer documentation.
3] Choose 'Have Disk'.
4] Choose 'Browse'.
5] Insert the disk with the CD-ROM drivers in the appropriate drive.
NOTE: If the drivers are on a 3 1/2 disk, the appropriate drive will be the 'A:' drive. Many common drivers are also included with the 'Windows 95' software.
6] Find the folder where the appropriate drivers are located and select it.
7] Choose 'OK'.
8] Choose 'OK' in the 'Install from Disk' dialog box.
9] Choose 'OK'.
10] Choose 'Finish'.
